By 2050, more than three quarters of the world's population are expected to live in cities. Especially in emerging and third countries, cities are rapidly growing into metropolises with several million inhabitants. Megacities produce enormous amounts of greenhouse gases and consume a lot of energy. At the same time, young people are demanding action on the climate crisis, but their voices often go unheard.

The C40 Global Youth and Mayors Forum unites two powerful groups to interact, collaborate and deliver action – making 97 cities across the globe climate-friendly, safe, and thriving places to live. Alongside committed city leaders, youth are powerful advocates to bring important and diverse perspectives to the table.

We're in a climate emergency which requires bold transformative action to protect people and the planet. To drive change, we need everyone. This project brings the youth climate movement and mayors together to deliver inclusive climate action in 97 cities, among them some of the biggest megacities worldwide.

IMPACT GOALS
  •  Climate youth leaders and mayors work together to implement and accelerate inclusive climate actions in 97 cities worldwide.
  • Through convening a Global Youth Climate Council Network C40 will create new youth climate councils and strengthen existing ones. C40 will connect them with each other to learn from their peers and to coordinate for maximum impact globally.
  • Current and future leaders develop their capacities and skills in urban climate solutions and in the organisation of campaigns.
TIMELINE AND BUDGET
The funding needed for 2022 to create a global network of youth climate leaders engaged in city and national youth climate councils is €175,000.

WITH YOUR SUPPORT
This project strengthens the role of youth within the Global Youth and Mayors Forum and builds capacities of future climate leaders. It provides huge opportunities for powerful joint advocacy to national governments from mayors and youth, and thereby helps to accelerate climate solutions in 97 big cities around the word.
