The wild forests and unspoiled ecosystems of Romania’s Carpathian Mountains are in danger. At 45,000 hectares, Nucsoara once had the largest surface area of virgin forestry in Romania. As a result, both private landowners and the ‘wood mafia’ have profited from its deforestation.

Local communities must be empowered to preserve and protect their surrounding forests. This project will enable the Nucsoara community to develop economically and socially, while creating sustainable protection measures for its backcountry and all its ecological wealth. Doing so it will set an example for other communities to follow.

The world’s ecosystems can be protected only if the people dependent on them have the opportunity and the skills to do so. This project will employ strategies known to be necessary and effective for ensuring long-term sustainability in conservation. The result will be an example of how social, economic and ecological aspects can and should be integrated into climate solutions. By doing so, the organisation builds solutions with lasting impact.

The forest and biodiversity of the Fagaras Mountains can only be sustainably protected and ensured of a bright future with a strong and enduring mandate from the surrounding communities. Therefore, it is not enough to simply condemn climate-destructive behaviour: real change can only be achieved if the social and economic situation of the local communities improves.
